Investing in Mental Wellness for a Brighter Future

The Islamic Center of Detroit (ICD) exists to serve the most vulnerable people within metro Detroit through the Muslim faith, Islamic principles, and a fundamental belief in assisting others.  Officially opened to the public in January 2000, the ICD has been expanding since then by working on new projects that benefit both Muslims and non-Muslims in the Detroit metro area (48228) and surrounding communities. My Mental Wellness Program (MMWP)

The My Mental Wellness Program (MMWP) is an existing program that serves over 5,700 individuals each year (of which nearly 2,000 are youth), all free of charge, addressing mental health and wellness issues such as depression, stress, suicidal thoughts, and anxiety (all of which have been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic). Over 50% of those served are persons of color, and all are LMI living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level (defined by eligibility for free/reduced lunch). Since access to mental health resources is nearly non-existent to the community that ICD serves, and there is a strong stigma against the provision of mental health services (particularly amongst African Americans, Muslim Americans, as well as the poor), the MMWP is essential to the future of the community. Since this is the whole of our service population, it is imperative to provide not only education and prevention services, but also emergency counseling and referrals to decrease the number of incarcerations and accidental deaths. We believe this program is highly replicable in any large urban area where LMI is 200% below the federal poverty level.

Besides offering day to day emergency counseling through a licensed therapist, we also offer weekly, monthly, and quarterly education, prevention, and community outreach lectures, workshops, seminars, trainings, and other preventative services throughout the year. Topics include managing stress, domestic violence, teen parenting, sex trafficking, drug/alcohol awareness, suicide prevention and awareness, CPR training, etc. The MMWP also offers group therapy, support groups, yoga, mindfulness training, and art therapy for youth. Through the MMWP, ICD has addressed the community’s stigma on mental health in creative ways (such as art therapy, yoga, and other recreational activities) and has given those most in need in our service area a safe environment to address their needs. We desire to de-stigmatize mental health and make resources more accessible so community members can live stable and healthy lives. Programming is offered and overseen by Takween Dwaik, MA, LLPC, as well as other local experts, college professors, doctors, and others.

This programming is innovative and essential, as it provides a safe place for many community members to seek the supportive services they need in an environment they feel comfortable with (especially undocumented refugees and immigrants who do not trust hospital or other state funded resources). In fact, for many Muslims in the community (including refugees and immigrants), ICD is the only place that they feel addresses their emotional and spiritual needs, especially when it comes to acculturation issues and the language barrier.
