The Well of Mercy is unlike any other shelter in Chicago, as residents and their children may live here for up to five years. Most of the women we serve are victims of poverty, domestic violence, or both. To that end, our unique program educates, empowers, and enables these women to thrive independently, thus breaking the cycle of poverty and abuse in their families.

At The Well of Mercy, residents are expected to complete their education and secure a job that pays a living wage. To make this possible, they live rent-free with free child care during work and school hours. They attend financial workshops, partake in career counseling and placement services, learn about healthy parenting and relationships, and receive unconditional support from each other and our dedicated staff. From day one, our residents are expected to cook, clean, and contribute to the household just as they would in a typical living situation. More than reinforcing responsibility, self-reliance, and accountability, this simple requirement builds trust and community—and for this very reason, we’re so much more than a shelter. The Well of Mercy is a family.

This #GivingTuesday, The Well of Mercy is asking for donations to keep our doors open and the lights on for our 12 families, including 17 kids with four more on the way!

Make this holiday season a little brighter by donating today!
